The Jersey Journal from Jersey City, New Jersey (2024)

THE JERSEY JOURNAL, TUESDAY, APRIL 20, 1976 Mrs. Angelina Pellagatti, ran Italian restaurants Mrs. Angelina Pellagatti, 79, of Jersey City, who was the proprietor of a chain of Italian restaurants in Jersey City, will be buried Friday in Jersey City Cemetery, after a 9 a.m. Mass at Holy Rosary Church, Jersey native of Monopoli in the province of Bari, Italy, she came to the U.S. at the age of 13.

Mrs. Pellagatti served as the hostess of the Holiday Sweet Shop, 281 Newark when it was first opened in 1955. Her husband, Frank, was the chef. The couple retired from the restaurant business in 1959. However, the business is still operated by the family.

Mrs. Pellagatti was active in several religious organizations. She was a former president of the Holy Rosary Women's Society of Holy Rosary Church. Mrs. Pellagatti was well known in the village section of the Downtown area of Jersey City for her gourmet cooking and helping to feed other people during hard times, according to a friend of the family.

Mrs. Pellagatti is the mother of 10 children, 26 grandchildren and three great grandchildren. She died yesterday at St. Francis Community Health Center, Jersey City. The Scatuorchio Funeral Home, Jersey City, is handling arrangements.

Two recount Michael Greer is slain, fatal beating decorator to the famous of Marine OCEANSIDE, Calif. Two former Marines say they were i in a group who fatally beat a mentally retarded recruit, ignoring the recruit's screams for mercy, as a drill instructor egged them on with shouts of "kill, kill," according to a lawyer representing parents of the dead Marine. Four or five recruits took turns beating Pvt. Lynn McClure as he tried to escape, shouting in terror, "God, no, please, what did I do?" the Marines told Attorney John Gyorkos. Gyorkos, representing McClure's family in a $3.5 million wrongful death claim against the corps, played a tape recording for reporters yesterday.

He said it was an interview with two unidentified former Marines, since discharged, who said they took part in beating McClure at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot in San Diego 6. The drill instructor involved in the alleged incident was not identified. McClure, 20, of Lufkin, lapsed into a coma with massive brain damage. He never regained consciousness, and died March 13 in a Houston Veterans Administration hospital. McClure was injured while fighting with pugil sticks, padding-tipped poles.

Pugil stick bouts are used to practice bayonet fighting, instill an agressive, fighting spirit and as a disciplinary measure. One of the men interviewed said that he and McClure had been in a correctional custody platoon for being AWOL and had just been transferred to the "motivation platoon" for troublesome recruits when they were ordered into the pugil stick bouts. The other said he was one of four or five recruits who took turns beating McClure, who stood 5-feet-6 and weighed 115 pounds, and said he struck the final blow that knocked out McClure. "'We were like animals," he said. "'We got out there for blood with pugil sticks and just went crazy.

NEW YORK (UPI) World famous interior designer Michael Greer, his hands bloodied and his feet bound by a scarf, has been found dead in his lavish Park Avenue apartment. A police spokesman said Greer, whose clients included Mrs. Jacqueline Onassis and former President Richard Nixon, was wearing only a blue pajama top when he was found dead on his bed Monday morning.

Greer apparently was strangled, the police spokesman said, but the city Medical Examiner's office declined to give an exact cause of death pending an autopsy set for 9 a.m. EST today. Police said the door to Greer's apartment was ajar and a friend found him dead in his fifth-floor apartment shortly after 9 a.m. Greer, a 60-year-old bachelor, was an expert in 18th and 19thcentury furniture an expertise that recommended him to his White House clients. The designer had a special attachment for French Empire furniture, and both his own apartments in Manhattan's exclusive Turtle Bay neighborhood and later on Park Avenue were famous for their collections of sculptures of imperial eagles.

Among Greer's clients were the Moroccan Embassy, the Harvey Firestones and actresses Mary Martin, Ethel Merman and Geraldine Page. Greer, a former president of the American Society of Interior Designers, was also a member of the faculty at the New York School of Interior design. He wrote several books, including "Interior Design" and "Confessions of an Interior Decorator." A native of Monroe, Greer originally set out to be an architect. In one of his books he said he decided to "leave the outside of the house and go inside." Joel Jacobson, president of the PUC, said Monday that the change in sulfur levels will save customers in Southern Jersey $4.8 million annually in fuel costs.

(UPI) The bodies of two elderly sisters were found last night in shallow graves behind their Milford, home, police reported. An autopsy was scheduled for today on Louise Tomasetti, 80, and her 60-year-old sister, Irene Barberi. The bodies were uncovered in a freshly-dug garden behind their Colonial Avenue home about 8 p.m. Police went to the house after they were called by relatives who said they became concerned when they had not heard from the two women since last Friday.

The family members had gone to the home and found blood stains inside but no trace of the sisters.
