We Tried Every LED Light Mask—These Are the Best (2025)

LED face masks may seem like a gimmick designed purely for selfie taking, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. In reality, LED-light therapy is a tried-and-true treatment for a wide variety of skin concerns, a great addition to any skin-care routine. Believe it or not, the positive effects of LED light were first discovered by NASA. Way back in 1993, light-emitting diodes (LEDs) were being studied to see if they could be used to help astronauts grow plants in space. As pure coincidence, the scientists conducting the study noticed that the lights helped heal wounds on their skin faster. It’s since been found that red light stimulates collagen production, leading to not only faster healing times but also skin-rejuvenation qualities and antiaging effects. (Therabody writes a good concise explanation.) Now not only is LED-light therapy standard in pretty much every dermatologist office, aesthetician studio, and wellness retreat, but you can also use it at home.

We’ve come a long way since those early days. Home LED masks don’t just include the requisite red light; many also use other frequencies like blue light for acne-fighting antibacterial effects. Near-infrared waves (which are longer wavelengths, actually invisible to the naked eye) also feature in mosts of these masks to penetrate deep into the skin to help firm and brighten from inside. Once a novelty item that only true skin-care obsessives knew about, today’s LED masks come in all shapes and sizes to fit into anyone’s skin-care routine, no matter their skin worries, budget, or commitment ability. LED masks are a constant part of our personal skin-care routines here at Esquire for all of the reasons we’ve already laid out but also because they’re just so darn easy to use. No messy products, no hours spent in front of the mirror, no need to even stop what you’re doing. Most masks are designed to be worn while you do other things (even if that other thing is just watching TV), and many are portable enough to fit in a carry-on.

We tested every LED mask you could possibly imagine and have judged them harshly based on factors like efficacy, ease of use, comfort, daily time commitment, and price. Believe us, we are harsh critics, but these LED masks are the ones that are worth your time—and the ones we come back to over and over.

This mask may look like Dr. Doom’s, but it’s anything but criminal. Out of all the masks we tried, it’s not only one of the easiest and fastest to use, but it’s also packed with customizable features that allow you to use it for multiple skin issues. You’ll find the requisite red lights, which help to target overall skin health but particularly collagen production to curb signs of aging like fine lines, wrinkles, and uneven tone. There’s also blue light, which targets and kills bacteria, like the kind that causes acne. Then, near-infrared light penetrates deeper into layers of your skin to help boost circulation and improve skin from deep inside. (Circulation can help things like uneven skin tone as well.) You can cycle through each with the touch of a button on the side of the mask and target specific issues. Or you can do a full nine-minute routine that gives you three minutes of each setting.

This mask says it includes three times the average amount of lights for better coverage across your whole face. We haven’t counted them individually (the brand says there are 648, so we’ll take their word for it), but we can confirm it does completely cover your face. Part of that is the tight spacing of the lights inside the device, and part of it is that it physically covers your entire face. There’s not even an opening for your mouth, so hit that vape before you settle in to use it. We appreciate the optional, but included, silicone eye protectors that help shield your eyes while using it so you can still watch TV or read while it’s working on your skin. More than those, we particularly love the vibration features that massage your temples and eye area for a relaxing and depuffing effect. There are three strengths of vibration, and we found that the strongest setting really is strong, to the point that it can be a bit uncomfortable but in the way that a really intense massage is uncomfortable. You can also use the LED and vibration components separately for even further customization.

Best Red-Light-Only LED Face Mask

We Tried Every LED Light Mask—These Are the Best (8)

Cons

  • We Tried Every LED Light Mask—These Are the Best (15)May be slightly strong for sensitive skin

If you’re using an LED mask mainly for antiaging benefits, you’ll be hard-pressed to find one stronger than this. The combination of wavelengths—red, near-infrared, and deep near-infrared—penetrate the skin at three different depths. The brand says the light penetrates 10mm into your skin, which in skin terms is quite a lot. The red light targets collagen production to help smooth signs of aging, while the near-infrared energizes deeper skin cells to help firm skin, even skin tone, and improve overall skin health. The deep near-infrared also stimulates collagen production but on a deeper level than the red, so you get more collagen on multiple levels. More collagen is always better when it comes to the longevity of your skin. The deep near-infrared is also concentrated around areas like your eyes and mouth, which are the areas that typically show signs of aging first.

Compared with other masks, this one has a pretty standard amount of lights (236) that are spaced well to get as much coverage across your face as possible. But because of the three wavelengths of light, we found it’s just as effective, if not more so, than some other masks with even more lights. It’s definitely strong—so strong that you don’t need to use it every day to get the antiaging benefits. We particularly love that it’s soft and, even though the controller is corded to the mask itself, it can roll up like a burrito (or maybe more like a crepe) for easy storage and portability. It’s incredibly comfortable to wear, and the innovative silicone straps mold to the shape of your head so well you can barely tell it’s there. Keep in mind that if you’re hoping to help treat acne with your LED mask, this one does not include blue light, so it may not be the best for you, but it’s an ideal choice for anyone hoping to improve the long-term health and youthful look of their mug.

Most Comfortable LED Face Mask for Men

Omnilux Omnilux Men LED Mask

We Tried Every LED Light Mask—These Are the Best (16)

Pros

  • We Tried Every LED Light Mask—These Are the Best (17)Larger size
  • We Tried Every LED Light Mask—These Are the Best (18)Very comfortable straps
  • We Tried Every LED Light Mask—These Are the Best (19)Only needs to be used a few times a week
  • We Tried Every LED Light Mask—These Are the Best (20)FDA cleared

Cons

  • We Tried Every LED Light Mask—These Are the Best (21)Does not have a blue-light option
  • We Tried Every LED Light Mask—These Are the Best (22)Only one mode

On the surface, this is a pretty standard LED mask. It includes red and near-infrared light, which we’ve established helps to stimulate collagen production, smooth out signs of aging, and brighten and even skin. However, this mask includes two different wavelengths of near-infrared light, which penetrate two different (deeper) depths of the skin. According to the brand, this is because men’s skin is thicker (true), so it’s designed to particularly benefit men.

Speaking of that, we always get a little skeptical when we hear about things like LED masks “for men” because, well, a dude can just use any mask. But we see what they were going for here. Not only does it include the aforementioned deeper-penetrating near-infrared light to get through thicker male skin, but it’s also bigger, with a larger surface area, which makes it a much more comfortable option if you’re a guy with a larger face. Plus, it’s soft, which makes it even more comfortable to use. Some more typical masks work fine but can feel too small on our faces, particularly the hard ones, but this one fits across any face comfortably with no visible uncovered spots. There might not be as many lights as others on this list have (only 132), but the overall design is thoughtful, and we found the mask to be just as effective as others.

Best Multiuse LED Face Mask

Dr Dennis Gross SpectraLite FaceWare Pro

We Tried Every LED Light Mask—These Are the Best (23)

Pros

  • We Tried Every LED Light Mask—These Are the Best (24)Quick treatment time
  • We Tried Every LED Light Mask—These Are the Best (25)Red- and blue-light options
  • We Tried Every LED Light Mask—These Are the Best (26)Can be flipped to use on your neck
  • We Tried Every LED Light Mask—These Are the Best (27)FDA cleared

Cons

  • We Tried Every LED Light Mask—These Are the Best (28)Mask is on the smaller side
  • We Tried Every LED Light Mask—These Are the Best (29)Straps can be slightly uncomfortable

This is the mask that started it all. It was one of the first home LED masks to hit the market and still one of the most popular, still one of our favorites to use. It hugs the contours of your face to make sure you have adequate coverage. It is slightly on the small side, though, so if you have a big head, you may want to try it on before you buy. It combines red and blue light for both antiaging effects and antibacterial acne-curbing benefits. Use them individually or in combination based on what you’re hoping to achieve.

There are only 162 lights, which isn’t nothing but certainly isn’t the most you can find, but we’ve never had an issue with coverage when using it. And even though it’s a hard mask, it’s comfortable to wear. Since the controls are integrated into the mask, it’s easy to pop on and go about your business like washing dishes, folding clothes, or really just anything else. We appreciate a multitasking tool that we can use without plopping on the couch motionless (unless we want to, of course). What makes it truly multiuse, however, is that you can flip it over and wear it kind of like a neck brace to give your neck the same LED benefits you’re giving your face. Because, really, who doesn’t want a better-looking neck, too?

Best LED Face Mask with Cooling Tech

Shark CryoGlow iQLED Face Mask & Under-Eye Cooling Mask

We Tried Every LED Light Mask—These Are the Best (30)

Pros

  • We Tried Every LED Light Mask—These Are the Best (31)Easy-to-understand targeted modes
  • We Tried Every LED Light Mask—These Are the Best (32)Under-eye cooling can be used on its own or with LED
  • We Tried Every LED Light Mask—These Are the Best (33)Comfortable to wear
  • We Tried Every LED Light Mask—These Are the Best (34)Optional eye shields

Cons

  • We Tried Every LED Light Mask—These Are the Best (35)Mask can feel bulky
  • We Tried Every LED Light Mask—These Are the Best (36)Design is not as sleek as some others’

Out of all the LED masks we’ve tested, this one stands out for a variety of reasons. The combination of red, blue, and near-infrared light comes from innovative iQLED wicks. That means that the diodes are able to switch between lights seamlessly (instead of having it come from separate diodes), allowing for better, more complete coverage across your whole face. The overall design, while slightly on the clunky side, is big enough to cover even larger faces despite being a hard mask, and the overhead straps secure it well so you can walk around while it’s on. The controller is corded to the mask, which is slightly inconvenient but is the easiest and clearest to use that we’ve tried.

What we love most about it, however, is the integrated cryo technology, which cools your under-eye area for depuffing and tightening effects while you use it. There are three levels of cold depending on your comfort level, but we found that even the highest setting feels incredible with no iciness or discomfort. We’ve even been known to use the mask with just the cryo setting when we need a quick pick-me-up under our eyes—the settings allow you to use it on its own or with the LED—and with a customizable treatment time of five to 15 minutes, it’s proved to be one of our favorite ways to perk up in the morning after a long night or decompress before bed.

Best LED Mask for Hair Growth

Higher Dose Red Light Hat

We Tried Every LED Light Mask—These Are the Best (37)

Pros

  • We Tried Every LED Light Mask—These Are the Best (38)Uses a specific wavelength to target hair growth
  • We Tried Every LED Light Mask—These Are the Best (39)Comfortable to wear
  • We Tried Every LED Light Mask—These Are the Best (40)Can be worn in public
  • We Tried Every LED Light Mask—These Are the Best (41)FDA cleared

Cons

  • We Tried Every LED Light Mask—These Are the Best (42)Takes a long time to see results
  • We Tried Every LED Light Mask—These Are the Best (43)Battery pack can feel bulky

You might usually find LED masks designed for your face, but red light has benefits way beyond just your mug. Did you know red light can help stimulate hair growth, too? The same circulation-boosting, cell-energizing properties that give you antiaging benefits can help stimulate hair growth as well. This cap, which looks like your typical baseball cap, conceals 120 LED bulbs inside so you can benefit from the hair-growth-stimulating, shed-reducing properties of red light without looking like you just escaped from a lab.

The red light inside is dialed to a 650nm wavelength, which has been shown to help increase blood flow to your hair follicles and stimulate growth. Charge it up, turn on the battery pack housed on the back of the cap, and pop it on for ten minutes while you go about your business. It’s also great to use in addition to hair-growth products like minoxidil that you might already be using to help bolster their effects. Keep in mind that, as with all LED masks, consistency is key, and hair-growth effects tend to take a bit longer to show than light’s effects on skin. But using this every day for a few months made our hair look fuller and healthier.
