Mark in Fairly Active Trading Here Stocks presented a firmer tone today on the local exchange with the exception of a few i issues which rose more than a point. Western Public Service extended its gain of yesterday, rising -to a new high for the year at Trading was fairly active in this issue. Westinghouse Electric also established a new 1932 high at but closed at up Columbia Gas featured dealings in the fuel section with an advance of points to Carnegie Metals was active with 2,300 shares changing hands at $1. Lone Star Gas held unchanged at Trading in other shares was unusually light and prices of the few stocks which appeared on the tape were generally on the downside.
United States Steel advanced over a point in the unlisted division while General Motors sold fractionally Westinghouse Airbrake closed: at up points. Sales totaled 10,785 shares. LOW-PRICED CARRIER BONDS TURN UPWARD Prospect of New Wage Cut Stimulates Rise By The United Press NEW YORK, Sept. 1-Improvement in railroad issues featured an irregular session on the bond market today. Following several days of profittaking sales, low-priced carrier issues responded to several favorable developments in the railroad situation.
Gains of fractions to a point were made by active bonds of the Nickel Plate, Baltimore Ohio, Missouri Pacific, Frisco and others. Demand was stimulated by reports that executives of Eastern roads were approaching an agreement on consolidation. Another bullish development for the rails was the prospect of another railway wage cut in the near future. Gains and losses were about evenly divided in the industrial and public utility corporation section, while United States government issues turned slightly lower. Strength in Argentine and German issues featured the foreign list.
Pittsburgh Produce Demand was slow on the Pittsburgh wholesale produce market today. The apple market was dull: cabbage about steady; onion dull; potato steady. Apples-Bushel -No. 1 N. Y.
